Extraordinary ALBA-TCP Summit condemns attempted coup d’état in Venezuela

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Monday thanked the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP) for its solidarity in the face of the “aggression” suffered by the country after the presidential elections of July 28.
During his speech at the XI Extraordinary Summit of ALBA-TCP Heads of State, which is being held virtually, the President warned that the South American country has been the victim of a “criminal attack” from all sides, with the purpose of carrying out a “cybernetic coup d’état”. Maduro underlined his gratitude to the countries of the bloc and the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean for the “effective political, diplomatic, moral and spiritual support and active solidarity”.
“They wanted to take Venezuela to a total confrontation, to then go out and ask for a military intervention”, said Maduro, regarding what he considers were the plans of a sector of the Venezuelan opposition with the support of some countries. In view of such facts, the president said that the Venezuelan people “have faced, stopped and defeated” the destabilization attempts.
The Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, spoke on behalf of Caribbean nations and expressed support for the reelection of President Maduro, whom he defined as “passionate and interested in Venezuela’s justice and its processes”.
Communiqué
In a communiqué issued at the end of the virtual meeting, it is stated that the ALBA-TCP member countries “strongly condemn any coup d’état or attempted coup d’état, as they constitute the violent, illegal and unconstitutional way that threatens democracy, peace and life itself, as well as the destabilizing plans and actions promoted by external factors that attempt to ignore the will of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, expressed democratically and legitimately at the ballot box”.
They also repudiated “the brutal communicational war, loaded with hate, intolerance, discrimination and contempt in social networks” and rejected the attacks and acts of vandalism against people, public infrastructure, religious and patriotic symbols that make up the Venezuelan idiosyncrasy”.
In another point of the agreement they demanded “that the international community respect the sovereignty, self-determination and democratic will of the Venezuelan people. We regret the decision of some governments to question the electoral results in Venezuela and to promote resolutions and pronouncements that do not reflect the reality of the country”.
